Giovanna and Tom Fletcher made the decision to give their 11-year-old son a phone as he prepares to start secondary school. Recognizing the importance of managing and ensuring their son’s safety online, the couple emphasized the need for open communication within the family.

The Fletchers, like many families, are navigating the complexities of children having smartphones, especially with concerns about exposure to inappropriate content and mental health issues. They are actively engaging in conversations with their children to empower them in the digital world.

To support families in discussing online safety, a campaign called The Family Chat, in collaboration with Tesco Mobile, has been launched. The initiative aims to provide resources such as Tesco Mobile’s age-specific toolkits to assist parents and children in navigating the digital landscape.

Giovanna shared her enthusiasm for the campaign, highlighting the valuable insights it offers for families. With their three sons, aged 7, 9, and 11, the Fletchers have implemented strategies to ensure responsible device usage. Their eldest son has a restricted smartphone for communication purposes, emphasizing the importance of setting boundaries and explaining the reasoning behind them to the children.

Acknowledging the risks of excessive screen time, Giovanna emphasized the family’s rules, including no phones in the bedroom and limited phone usage during meals. She stressed the gradual introduction of internet access to children based on their readiness and the importance of maintaining a balance.

In addition to practical tips for parents, such as setting up child accounts and utilizing safety filters, ongoing conversations about online safety are encouraged. Dr. Rebecca Whittington, Reach’s online safety editor, emphasized the significance of prioritizing a safe setup for new devices to protect children from potential online risks.
