Consumers who made purchases on Amazon in March are being alerted to a new deceptive scheme falsely claiming a “product recall” has been initiated. The concerning text message, targeting UK mobile phones, initiates with a notification titled “Amazon Product Recall Notice.”
The message proceeds by offering users a full refund and prompts them to click on a link to sign in to their Amazon account. To escalate the urgency, it directs individuals to immediately discontinue using the product.
The text message, obtained by Mirror Online, states, “Dear Customer, we are notifying you of a product recall impacting an item from your March 2026 order due to a design flaw posing a potential safety hazard. We regret any inconvenience caused and value your swift attention to this critical safety issue. Thank you for your ongoing trust in Amazon.”
While the message may sound alarming, there is no actual product recall. It is merely a phishing scam intended to deceive concerned customers into divulging their login credentials, which could lead to detrimental consequences.
Clicking on the provided link redirects users to a counterfeit Amazon sign-in page designed to appear authentic. Once login details are entered, scammers can hijack the information, potentially making unauthorized transactions, locking users out of their accounts, or accessing personal data.
Although this scam is recent, having just started circulating on mobile devices, it is not the first instance of Amazon customers being targeted. Earlier in February, the consumer group Which? issued a similar caution following cybercriminals spreading messages alleging a product recall “for safety reasons” and linking to a fraudulent Amazon page.
In a communication to Which?, Amazon emphasized, “There are various scams urging individuals to make payments via email, phone, or text for items or services. Exercise caution whenever pressured to act urgently, as scammers often create a false sense of urgency and employ persuasive tactics to deceive consumers. We urge consumers to report suspected scams to safeguard their accounts and notify law enforcement of malicious actors.”
Amazon also advises customers to be vigilant of the following:
– Unfamiliar phone numbers, or messages from numbers displaying unusual or foreign country codes
– Notifications about orders or deliveries that were not anticipated
– Links containing misspellings, unusual formatting, or URLs using IP addresses instead of standard web addresses
