Andy Murray, the two-time Wimbledon champion, has announced his intention to transition from professional tennis to golf. Following his retirement from tennis last year, the 38-year-old, who briefly coached Novak Djokovic, is now dedicated to enhancing his golf skills.
Although Murray has participated in various celebrity golf events in the past 18 months, he acknowledges that becoming a professional golfer is improbable. Nevertheless, he nurtures the ambition of engaging in the sport in a different role. During an appearance on The Romesh Ranganathan Show, Murray expressed his desire to work as a caddie for a professional golfer and compete at The Open.
“I am contemplating the idea of becoming a golf caddie, hopefully for a top golfer in the future,” Murray stated. “I have a passion for golf, and working with a top player to assist with decisions on the course would be a fantastic opportunity.”
The tennis icon disclosed that Robert MacIntyre is his preferred partner, having previously teamed up with the fellow Scot at the BMW PGA Championships.
When asked about the potential overshadowing of the player he would support due to his celebrity status, Murray responded, “Initially, there might be excitement, but it would eventually become routine.”
“Ideally, imagine carrying Robert MacIntyre’s bag when he wins The Open. That would be the ultimate dream job,” Murray added.
While there is speculation that Murray might strive to qualify for The Open in the future, he promptly dismissed those notions. “I do not aspire to play in The Open. I aim to participate in regional qualifiers at some point, which could be a fun experience if I reach that level,” Murray explained.
