A new conflict is on the horizon concerning Shamima Begum as reports suggest she may soon be released from a Syrian detention camp. The 26-year-old, who once belonged to ISIS, is seeking reentry into the UK through a fresh appeal, setting off a contentious battle with the government.
Shamima Begum, a native of London, was only 15 when she departed to join ISIS and subsequently had her British citizenship revoked in 2019. Her legal team argues that she was manipulated into sexual exploitation at a young age. The European Court of Human Rights has requested clarification from the UK regarding the decision to strip her citizenship.
Recently, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood affirmed a strong stance against Begum’s return, emphasizing that the matter had been extensively litigated up to the UK Supreme Court. The government remains steadfast in its position and is committed to defending it vigorously at the European Court of Human Rights.
The situation raises uncertainties about Begum’s future whereabouts. With the Syrian government reaching a ceasefire with the Syrian Democratic Forces and gaining substantial control over the country, the landscape for individuals detained in northern Syria, including approximately 10 British men, 20 women, and 40 children, is evolving. Begum is reportedly situated in the al-Roj camp in that region.
Former Tory attorney general Dominic Grieve insists that Begum is the responsibility of the UK, a sentiment echoed by both ex-Tory Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg and Labour peer Alf Dubs, who condemn the decision to revoke her citizenship.
Judges in Strasbourg have prompted the Home Office to consider whether Begum might have been a victim of trafficking, highlighting alleged failures to safeguard a vulnerable child. Begum, now 26, ventured to Syria in 2015 with two schoolmates, both of whom are believed to have perished in the conflict.
