The family of a Scottish man who passed away in Colombia is facing anguish after discovering that his remains might have been laid to rest in South America without their awareness. Ross Macquarrie, aged 38 and hailing from Mauchline in East Ayrshire, was found deceased in his Bogotá residence by staff on November 11 last year. His loved ones have been striving to repatriate his body to Scotland ever since.

Adding to their distress, those grieving for Ross were notified that his body could have been interred in Colombia due to space constraints in Bogotá’s mortuaries. They claim no knowledge of any autopsy being conducted.

Ross’ former partner Lindsay Melvin, 44, who shares a young daughter named Blake with him, expressed deep concern over the situation. She revealed the emotional toll the uncertainty has taken on their family, emphasizing their inability to bid a proper farewell to Ross and the stress it has caused.

Ross had embarked on a solo trip to South America on November 5. Lindsay had previously mentioned Ross feeling unwell during a video call with their daughter after his arrival. Concerned by his lack of response to messages, Lindsay sought help, only to find out the tragic news while en route to Colombia herself. Colombian authorities were reportedly investigating Ross’ passing.

Lindsay emphasized the lack of information regarding any post-mortem examination and the torment of not being able to grieve properly. She lamented the distressing handling of Ross’ remains, underscoring the need for closure and answers from the relevant authorities.

Friends of Ross remembered him as a devoted father and a lively individual. Lindsay cherished his playful nature and the strong bond he shared with their daughter. She stressed the importance of bringing Ross back to Scotland for a dignified farewell.

Local MSP Elena Whitam extended her sympathy to Ross’ family and offered support. She highlighted the potential involvement of relevant authorities in cases of sudden deaths abroad. Scottish Labour MP Elaine Stewart pledged ongoing assistance to facilitate Ross’ return to Scotland and provide closure for his family.

An FCDO spokesperson confirmed their assistance to the family following the tragic loss in Colombia.
