The Pentagon has announced a reduction in its involvement in NATO advisory groups, reflecting the Trump administration’s ongoing efforts to decrease the US military presence in Europe. This decision will lead to the reassignment of approximately 200 military personnel to other locations and will impact the operations of the 30 NATO Centres of Excellence, which provide training to allied forces in various warfare domains like Naval combat.
Under the leadership of President Trump, the US military has been gradually retracting from Europe. This trend was evident in the withdrawal of a troop brigade from Romania last year and in funding cuts to security aid programs for the Baltic states bordering Russia. In response to pressure from the Trump administration, member nations have agreed to increase their contributions to the alliance up to five percent of GDP over the next decade.
Despite the Pentagon’s directive for reduced military assistance in Europe, some lawmakers in Washington, including Republicans, are working to secure funding for the diminished security aid programs. Congress has passed legislation mandating that the Pentagon must consult with them before making significant reductions in US military involvement in Europe. The current US ‘force posture’ in Europe stands at 80,000 troops, and any decrease below 76,000 would require congressional approval.
While the number of troops being relocated due to these changes is relatively small compared to the overall US presence in Europe, their departure could result in a significant loss of American military expertise, potentially leading to a “brain drain” of skilled personnel. This development comes amidst tensions between President Trump and NATO members regarding his interest in acquiring Greenland for US security purposes.

This controversy coincides with his upcoming meeting with European leaders at Davos. Another altered image showed European leaders, including Keir Starmer, in the Oval Office examining a map where Greenland, Canada, and Venezuela were all covered in the American flag.
