A mother haunted by the tragic loss of her daughter in a sea accident has advised parents to enforce strict rules on their children, even if it may seem harsh, to safeguard their lives.
Fifteen-year-old Caitlin Ruddy met a heartbreaking fate when she drowned after being swept away at sea. The young college student, hailing from Newcastle, had ventured to the coast with friends to take a break from studying for exams. Caitlin’s mother, Sabrina, received a call from her daughter assuring her of a swift return, only to later find herself by Caitlin’s hospital bedside as life-support was disconnected.
An investigation later disclosed that a powerful wave had pulled Caitlin from Cullercoats Bay’s north pier into the ocean. Despite valiant rescue attempts by lifeboat crews and a passerby, the teenager could not be saved once retrieved from the water.
Today marks a decade since the sorrowful incident that robbed Caitlin of her future, leaving her family grappling with enduring sorrow. Sabrina implores parents to educate their children about the perils of the sea, emphasizing the need for a stark reality check, even if it may upset them. She stresses the importance of instilling caution, as even minimal water exposure holds potential dangers of drowning.
Caitlin had visited Cullercoats with friends on January 16, 2016, while Sabrina briefly visited a friend. Caitlin had assured her mother of her imminent return in a phone call shortly before 5:30 pm, expressing her love. Little did Sabrina know that would be their final conversation.
Approximately two hours later, police arrived at the place where Sabrina was, delivering the grim news of her daughter’s mishap. Sabrina recounted her disbelief upon witnessing Caitlin’s state in the hospital room, where medical staff were fighting to save her. The painful moment of bidding farewell as the life support was turned off still haunts Sabrina.
Following an official inquiry into Caitlin’s demise, a coroner ruled it as accidental. Sabrina has since collaborated with RNLI to share Caitlin’s story as a cautionary tale. She highlights the risks posed by the water and the impact on those attempting rescues. The family has also raised funds for RNLI in Caitlin’s memory.
Reflecting on Caitlin’s aspirations, Sabrina reveals her daughter’s ambition to become a pilot, a dream unfulfilled. Caitlin’s tragic passing has also profoundly affected her younger sister, Jessica, who harbors a deep fear of water, a constant reminder of the pain they endure daily.
Nick Ayers, RNLI Regional Water Safety Lead for North and East, acknowledges the family’s support in spreading water safety awareness. He stresses the unpredictability of the sea and the importance of knowing survival techniques in case of emergencies.
