Elon Musk has made a significant turnaround decision for Tesla after facing financial challenges in 2025. The world’s wealthiest person is planning to reduce the production of the company’s main asset following a rough year where Tesla’s revenue dropped by three percent overall and profits plummeted by 61 percent in the last quarter.

The decline in financial performance has prompted Musk to reassess Tesla’s focus, steering away from the manufacturing of electric vehicles towards a new direction in artificial intelligence and robotics. Tesla will now concentrate on AI and robotics, shifting away from producing Model S and Model X vehicles. The manufacturing plant in California will be repurposed to assemble Optimus robot units.

Simultaneously, Tesla is gearing up for a substantial $2 billion (£1.45 billion) investment in Musk’s AI project, xAI. This strategic shift was influenced by investor feedback, as Musk revealed during a recent funding round. The details of the company’s new direction were outlined in a shareholder letter, which introduced Tesla’s “Master Plan Part IV” focused on integrating AI into physical applications.

Musk emphasized that the decision to invest in xAI was driven by shareholder requests to leverage AI advancements for accelerating progress. This move aligns with Tesla’s strategic goals under Master Plan Part IV to integrate cutting-edge AI technologies into their offerings.

These developments come at a time when China has emerged as a dominant player in the electric vehicle market, surpassing Tesla with its BYD company. Additionally, scrutiny from the EU has been directed towards Musk’s AI venture, Grok, over concerns of potential misuse in creating manipulated images. The EU Commission is investigating whether Grok, integrated with Musk’s social media platform X, was used to produce altered images that violate regulations.

The EU Commission is particularly concerned about the potential distribution of “manipulated sexually explicit images” within the EU, which could infringe on the Digital Services Act. If found in violation, X might face penalties amounting to six percent of its global annual turnover.
