A town in China, Gangkou, Zhongshan, witnessed a disturbing incident where a lorry struck pedestrians multiple times while gunshots were heard. Videos circulating online captured the chaotic scene, showing a white van driving recklessly, crashing into other vehicles on the wrong side of the road.
One video depicted the van hitting a person on the ground, then reversing before moving forward to strike them again. Emergency services arrived at the scene with flashing lights amid shouting and screaming at the lorry driver’s actions.
In another video, police cars blocked the van’s escape, leading to people surrounding the vehicle, breaking its windows, and eventually pulling out the driver. Social media reports detailed how the lorry driver attempted to breach a police blockade, prompting officers to fire at the vehicle in an effort to stop it. During the escape attempt, the lorry hit pedestrians, including someone on an electric bike.
Gangkou, located in Guangdong province, is a bustling urban area known for its port-related commerce. Many social media users expressed outrage towards the lorry driver, drawing comparisons to a tragic incident in Zhuhai in November 2024, where 38 people were killed and 48 injured by a motorist driving into a crowd at a sports center.
The Zhuhai incident saw bodies scattered on the ground as witnesses rushed to aid the injured until emergency services arrived. The driver responsible, Fan Weiqiu, later identified as being unhappy with a divorce settlement, had also attempted self-harm with a knife.
