The mother of the murdered toddler, James Bulger, shared her apprehensions as Jon Venables, one of the killers, is set to undergo a parole hearing. Venables, along with Robert Thompson, abducted and brutally killed James in 1993 when they were just 10 years old. Venables was released from prison in 2001 but was later incarcerated again in 2010 and 2017 for possessing child abuse images. Despite being denied parole in 2023, he has now been granted a new opportunity for release.
Denise Fergus, the grieving mother, expressed her concerns about the upcoming parole process and her encounter with her son’s killer. She disclosed that she has been given access to the hearing, marking her first attendance at any of Venables’ parole proceedings. Despite not being able to see Venables’ face due to his protected identity, Denise will hear his voice through a video link.
Denise shared her deepest fears regarding Venables’ potential release, stating her uncertainty about her emotional response during the hearing. Parole officers decided to proceed with an oral hearing after reviewing various submissions, including impact statements from James’ family.
The agonizing wait for the parole decision continues to weigh heavily on Denise, who expressed her constant anxiety about the outcome. She described feeling imprisoned by the ongoing uncertainty while reflecting on the past 30 years of enduring emotional turmoil.
Both Thompson and Venables were released from a reoffenders institution after serving less than eight years, with Thompson reportedly not reoffending. Venables previously skipped his parole hearing in December 2023, prompting the recent referral of his case to the Parole Board for review.
A Parole Board spokesperson emphasized the rigorous process of assessing the risk posed by prisoners upon release and the thorough examination of evidence and reports leading up to oral hearings. The primary focus remains on protecting the public through careful consideration of all aspects related to the original crime and the offender’s potential impact on society.
