This ostentatious display has previously sparked criticism but has come under renewed scrutiny following protests in Iran on December 28 due to escalating living expenses. Subsequently, discontented citizens directed their frustration towards Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, demanding an end to his regime.
Despite the government labeling the protests as “riots,” there are concerns that a significant number of individuals have been brutally killed. The oppressive regime also enforced an internet blackout on January 8, causing anxiety among Iranians residing in the UK about the safety of their loved ones in Iran.
While Iranians grapple with the repercussions of a sharp devaluation of their currency, the privileged offspring of the country’s ruling class, known as the aghazadeh, continue to exhibit a carefree attitude towards wealth. Despite the turmoil faced by protestors, the aghazadeh lead a life of luxury, either within the country or abroad.
Sasha Sobhani, the son of a former high-ranking diplomat who served as the Iranian ambassador to Venezuela, has faced criticism for flaunting private jets, yachts, and luxury cars while posing with scantily clad women. In 2021, he faced legal proceedings in Madrid following accusations of money laundering and operating illicit gambling platforms upon Iran’s extradition request. Despite denying the allegations and fearing torture if sent back, he has maintained a lavish lifestyle in Spain, frequently sharing images with his idols from Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, Anashid Hoseini, a model and fashion designer married to the son of Iran’s former ambassador to Denmark, maintains a sizable Instagram following. Although she has not posted since the internet blackout, her previous content featured luxurious items, prompting questions from followers about her silence during the tumultuous period.
Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani and his brother Hassan, residents of Dubai managing a shipping empire, are known as the offspring of Ali Shamkhani, a prominent figure in Iran’s security hierarchy. Their extravagant lifestyle, showcased on social media, has incited anger among Iranian citizens, particularly the younger generation, who are appalled by the lack of accountability for their actions.
