Iran has heightened security measures following the postponement of US air-strikes due to concerns about their potential effectiveness. Leaders are reportedly in hiding, while security forces are on high alert in anticipation of further protests after President Trump’s warning of a potential strike in response to claims that Tehran might execute detained opposition figures.

It is believed that President Trump decided to delay the mission out of fear that it might not achieve its intended goal of supporting the anti-government demonstrations. However, the option of carrying out an attack remains open pending additional intelligence from inside Iran.

A source familiar with Western security matters stated that precise targeting could have been challenging due to the intense scrutiny on the streets, particularly in cities like Tehran. Emphasizing the importance of avoiding harm to civilians during any potential strikes, the source highlighted the risk of such casualties being exploited by the regime to further suppress dissent.

The UN Security Council has arranged an emergency meeting to address Iran’s deadly protests at the request of the United States. Tehran has made conciliatory gestures in an attempt to de-escalate tensions following Trump’s threats of intervention to prevent further violence against protesters.

Reports indicate that Iran has refrained from executing individuals detained in the violent crackdown on nationwide demonstrations. According to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, the crackdown has resulted in at least 2,615 fatalities, marking the deadliest wave of unrest in Iran in decades and evoking memories of the country’s turbulent 1979 Islamic Revolution.

While the judiciary in Iran charged one individual with offenses related to national security and propaganda against the regime, which do not carry the death penalty, the Foreign Minister and President Trump both affirmed that there were no plans to carry out executions. Trump expressed relief that the reported death sentence for the detainee in question had been lifted.

In response to the situation, Iran temporarily closed its airspace to commercial flights without explanation. Meanwhile, heightened security measures were observed in Israel amid concerns of potential retaliation from Iran or Lebanese Hezbollah, prompting precautionary measures at US military bases in Qatar and other locations.

Multiple countries, including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the EU, released a joint statement expressing grave concern over the Iranian government’s harsh crackdown on protesters. They condemned the use of violence by Iranian security forces and called for an end to the repression of the Iranian people.

European airlines, including the largest airline group in Europe, announced changes to flight schedules in the region due to the escalating tensions. Flights to and from Tel Aviv and Amman will be limited to daytime operations for the next five days as a precautionary measure in light of the evolving situation in the Middle East.
