Google has announced that it will discontinue Chrome support for older versions of macOS on MacBook devices. While Chrome will still function on MacBooks and iMacs, updates and security patches will no longer be provided, potentially exposing users to cybersecurity risks.
Users of Macs running macOS 12 (Monterey) or earlier will no longer receive Chrome updates. To continue using the browser, these users will need to upgrade to a newer operating system such as macOS Ventura. However, some older Mac models, like iMacs predating 2017 and MacBook Airs purchased before 2018, may not be compatible with Ventura, necessitating the purchase of a new device to ensure safe Chrome usage.
The transition is set to take effect in July of this year. Google confirmed that Chrome version 150 is the final release supporting macOS 12, with Chrome version 151, scheduled for release on July 28, 2026, requiring macOS 13 Ventura or later. Users are advised to update to macOS 13 or newer to receive future Chrome updates and security features.
While older versions of Chrome will remain functional on unsupported systems, no further updates will be provided. Google recommends moving to a supported macOS version to continue receiving the latest security updates and Chrome enhancements.
