A legal representative for a former CNN anchor has criticized what they call an unprecedented assault on freedom of speech in the United States after the anchor’s contentious arrest.
During his coverage of the Grammy awards in Los Angeles, Lemon was taken into custody by federal agents. The long-time journalist was arrested for filming anti-immigrant enforcement protesters disrupting a service inside a church in Minnesota.
Charges of conspiracy and interfering with the First Amendment rights of worshipers were filed against Lemon on Friday. The incident occurred on January 19 when Lemon entered Cities Church in St. Paul amidst immigration raids happening in nearby Minneapolis, where one of the church’s pastors was believed to be affiliated with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Lemon’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, condemned the focus on Lemon’s arrest by the Justice Department, calling it a diversion from more pressing matters. Lowell stated that Lemon would vigorously defend himself in court against the charges.
In response to the arrest, Lemon defended his actions, emphasizing that he was engaging in journalism by reporting on the protest inside the church.
US Attorney General Pam Bondi labeled the event a coordinated attack on the church and accused Lemon and other protesters of involvement. The specific charges against Lemon remain unclear, but others have been charged with violating rights and disrupting religious freedom within a place of worship.
The White House released a controversial statement, posting a photo of Lemon with a caption referencing lemons and implying Lemon’s involvement in the church riots in St. Paul without specifying his role.
CNN issued a statement expressing concerns about press freedom and the First Amendment following Lemon’s arrest, highlighting the importance of protecting journalists’ rights to report news in the public interest.
