Following a controversial immigration arrest that reignited discussions on border policies, a federal judge has intervened to halt the deportation of a five-year-old boy and his father in the United States.

In a recent development, US Judge Fred Biery issued a temporary order preventing the removal or relocation of Liam Conejo Ramos, a five-year-old, and his father Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias while their legal case progresses.

Currently, the father and son are detained at a family detention center in Dilley, Texas.

Their apprehension occurred last week outside their residence in Minnesota, drawing sharp criticism. Allegations suggest that immigration officers used the young boy to facilitate the arrest, purportedly instructing him to knock on the door to prompt his mother’s response.

Contrary to these claims, the Department of Homeland Security vehemently denies such accusations, labeling them as false. Officials state that Mr. Arias fled on foot, leaving his son in a vehicle in the driveway.

Efforts to contact the family’s attorney, Jennifer Scarborough, and representatives from the Department of Homeland Security regarding the court decision were unsuccessful initially.

Federal authorities assert that Mr. Arias was residing in the US unlawfully, although specifics have not been disclosed. White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller mentioned that the father entered the country without proper documentation in December 2024.

The family’s legal representative has indicated that Mr. Arias has a pending asylum request that could allow him to stay in the country legally.
