Envoi Allen tragically passed away following his participation in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. The horse collapsed while returning to the stables, prompting immediate attention from on-site veterinarians.
This marks the third fatality at this year’s Festival, with Hansard and HMS Seahorse also succumbing, though after falls during their races.
Owned by Cheveley Park Stud, it was announced before the race that this would be the 12-year-old Envoi Allen’s final performance before retirement. Despite finishing in ninth place as the oldest competitor, just behind The Jukebox Man owned by Harry Redknapp, Gaelic Warrior emerged victorious as the Gold Cup joint-favorite, defeating Jango Baie and Inothewayurthinkin.
Cheltenham Racecourse’s spokesperson expressed deep sorrow, stating, “Envoi Allen collapsed on the course after completing our fifth race of the day. Despite rapid veterinary intervention, the talented horse could not be saved. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to all those connected to Envoi Allen.”
Following the unfortunate incident, another horse, Saint Le Fort, also faced a fatal fall during the final race of the week, bringing the total number of equine casualties at the 2026 Festival to four. The racecourse’s officials, alongside veterinary experts, made the difficult decision to euthanize Saint Le Fort due to his injuries.
Darragh O’Keeffe, Envoi Allen’s jockey, shared his shock and grief over the sudden loss, emphasizing the horse’s remarkable career and swift passing. Richard Thompson, representing the horse’s owners, expressed deep sadness at the unexpected turn of events, highlighting Envoi Allen’s exceptional contributions over the years.
Gold Cup-winning jockey Andrew Thornton and commentator John Hunt paid tribute to Envoi Allen, acknowledging his impressive achievements and loyal fan base throughout his illustrious career.
