Legendary footballer Cristiano Ronaldo has hinted that the current Saudi Pro League season could mark the end of his illustrious career. The 41-year-old, who joined Al-Nassr in December 2022, disclosed to Vogue magazine that this season might be his final one as a professional player. Ronaldo, who recently tied the knot with his longtime partner Georgina Rodriguez, expressed his desire to leave behind a remarkable legacy before retiring from the sport.
With a staggering 976 career goals to his name, the Portuguese forward shared his plans for the future, emphasizing the need to explore various interests beyond football. Ronaldo mentioned his passion for activities like playing padel, traveling, and having more leisure time. Reflecting on his 25-year journey in football, which included numerous sacrifices, he highlighted the importance of enjoying the fruits of his labor alongside his partner.
The ongoing 2026-27 SPL season marks Ronaldo’s 25th year as a professional player, during which he has clinched five Ballon d’Or awards and five UEFA Champions League titles. His exceptional performance last season, scoring 28 league goals, propelled Al-Nassr to victory in the Saudi Arabian league, securing his first trophy with the club since his arrival in Riyadh and the team’s first league title since 2019.
Although Ronaldo missed Al-Nassr’s season opener following his wedding celebrations, coach Ange Postecoglou acknowledged his continuous support for the team. Postecoglou emphasized the importance of Ronaldo’s recovery ahead of their upcoming match against Al-Diriyah in the King’s Cup, underscoring the need for adequate rest given the tight schedule.
Ronaldo’s contemplation of retirement aligns with rival Lionel Messi’s recent sentiments following a personal tragedy. Messi, 39, expressed uncertainty about his future in football after his father’s passing, indicating that he may not continue playing the sport for much longer.
