Winnipeg resident Jackson Tachinski expressed overwhelming emotions as Canada’s men’s flag football team made history recently. Competing at the IFAF World Flag Football Championships in Dusseldorf, Germany, Tachinski and his team secured a bronze medal by triumphing over Mexico with a score of 34-26 in an intense match that ended in overtime with a crucial interception by Guillaume Béland.
This victory not only marked a significant achievement for the team but also secured Canada’s participation in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where flag football will debut as an Olympic event. Tachinski described the moment after the game-ending interception as incredibly emotional and surreal, expressing his difficulty in putting the experience into words.
Looking ahead to potentially representing Canada at the Olympics, Tachinski expressed his excitement, emphasizing the special opportunity it would be. Additionally, Canada’s women’s flag football team also made history by qualifying for the Olympics after defeating the U.S. 27-20 to complete an undefeated run, with quarterback Sara Parker named the tournament’s most valuable player.
Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Mike O’Shea commended both teams for their outstanding performances, stating his pride in their accomplishments. The possibility for CFL and NFL players to participate in flag football at the 2028 Olympics was highlighted, with Blue Bombers receiver Nic Demski considering the opportunity to compete at the national level.
Team Canada head coach Paul LaPolice, who has ties to Winnipeg, mentioned that decisions regarding potential additions to the Olympic roster from the CFL and NFL would be addressed in the future. The accessibility and creativity of flag football were underscored as key attractions by LaPolice, emphasizing the game’s inclusive and dynamic nature.
Football Manitoba CEO Bill Johnson noted the growing popularity of flag football at the local level, citing the sport’s appeal and the exposure gained through Olympic qualification. The achievements of both Canadian flag football teams have not only made headlines but also inspired a broader recognition of the sport’s athletic prowess on the international stage.
