The economy has long neglected the interests of ordinary workers.

In the past, the government prioritized chaos and uncertainty over improving living standards. They opted not to allocate funds to enhance transportation systems like trains, buses, and roads. There was a lack of investment in clean energy, future job opportunities, as well as schools, hospitals, and communities. Without stability and investment, economic growth becomes unattainable.

Residents of the North have experienced the adverse effects of insufficient investment, a reality I understand well after serving as a Leeds MP for 16 years.

I recently unveiled a significant investment in Northern rail services, the most substantial in a generation, in collaboration with local leaders to plan and implement this initiative.

The introduction of Northern Powerhouse Rail will revolutionize travel by enhancing connectivity between Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, and York with faster and more frequent train services. These services will extend to Newcastle, Hull, and other locations.

Currently, individuals in Liverpool have limited access to fast trains to Manchester, with lengthy travel times to Manchester Airport despite its proximity. Similarly, residents of Leeds face challenges due to inadequate mass transit options, limiting the ease of commuting to the city center.

These issues are not just inconveniences but significant barriers to economic growth, impacting job opportunities, businesses, and families in the North. The new investment aims to address these challenges by improving commute times, connectivity, and overall quality of life.

Previous actions, such as freezing rail fares for the first time in three decades and maintaining the £3 bus fare cap, have already made a positive impact on the community’s financial well-being. By establishing efficient connections between major Northern cities, we can unleash their full economic potential.

The development of Manchester’s tech sector, Leeds as a financial hub, Sheffield’s manufacturing strength, Liverpool’s advancements in life sciences, and the North East’s leadership in clean energy showcase the diverse economic opportunities awaiting the North.

Achieving national average productivity levels in the North could contribute an additional £40 billion annually to the economy, benefiting essential services like schools, hospitals, and public amenities.

While past administrations made promises of “levelling up,” the lack of progress in infrastructure development and job creation led to disappointment and forced migration of young talent from the North. This time, the commitment is real, with tangible investments being made to transform the North’s transportation networks and drive economic growth.

The North has a history of pioneering railway systems that revolutionized the world. Today, we are embarking on a new chapter by investing in railways that will reshape the North’s future. This government is dedicated to fulfilling its promises and ensuring that the North’s potential is fully realized.
