Former President Donald Trump has issued a concerning warning about an upcoming “day of retribution” in Minnesota. Despite growing criticism of ICE’s tactics and operations in the state, Trump has intensified the deployment of agents, specifically targeting Somali Americans, the majority of whom are American citizens.
Taking to his own Truth Social platform, Trump raised alarm, questioning whether Minnesotans desire to live among convicted criminals, drug dealers, rapists, and other dangerous individuals. Defending ICE’s actions amidst mounting protests, Trump stated that ICE agents aim to relocate these individuals back to their origin institutions and prisons.
Contrary to Trump’s claims, the Somali American community in Minnesota, with about 95% being US citizens through naturalization or birth, is being disproportionately impacted by ICE operations. The majority of Somali individuals not born in the US have resided in the country for over a decade, with only a small fraction being unauthorized migrants.
Despite reports of approximately 3,000 ICE agents deployed to Minnesota under the Trump administration, the ratio of agents to potential deportees remains significantly high. Trump boasted about crime reduction in areas where ICE operations occurred, citing Chicago as an example.
In a final ominous message, Trump assured the people of Minnesota that a “day of reckoning and retribution” is on the horizon.
