A colossal sapphire, believed to be the largest globally, has been unveiled, potentially valued at over $300 million (£224m). Known as the Purple Star Sapphire, the gem weighs an impressive 3,563 carats and was introduced in Colombo, Sri Lanka, by its undisclosed owners who are now looking to sell it. Renamed the “Star of Pure Land,” the round gem is identified as the biggest natural purple star sapphire by gem expert Ashan Amarasinghe, emphasizing its unique six-ray asterism.
Star sapphires are highly sought after for their star-like pattern under light, and purple variants are exceedingly rare. The gem, already polished, belongs to a group known as the Star of Pure Land Team, maintaining anonymity for security reasons.
Discovered in 2023 near Rathnapura, Sri Lanka’s gem hub, the sapphire was initially part of a larger gemstone purchase, with its true value recognized later by the owners. After two years, the team sought official validation, and the gem was certified by two laboratories for its exceptional rarity and size.
International appraisers estimate the sapphire’s value between $300 million and $400 million (£224 million and £298 million), positioning it as one of the most valuable gemstones worldwide. Sri Lanka’s reputation for superior sapphires, known for their vibrant colors and natural sparkle, adds to the allure of this unique find.
Sri Lanka’s gem-rich history, particularly in Rathnapura, has attracted gem enthusiasts worldwide. The unveiling of the Star of Pure Land has caused a stir in the gem industry, with anticipation for a potentially record-breaking sale.
The gem world has been captivated by other exceptional finds, including The Regent Kashmir, a blue sapphire that fetched $9.5 million (£7m) at auction, setting a per-carat price record. Guinness World Records recognized two outstanding gems, The Black Star of Eva and The Eye of Hope, further highlighting the fascination with rare and extraordinary gemstones.
These remarkable discoveries, valued at over $500 million (£373m), showcase some of the rarest natural gemstones ever found, drawing attention from collectors and designers worldwide. The trend continues with high-profile gem auctions, demonstrating the strong demand for investment-grade gemstones and the enduring appeal of rare and exquisite jewels.
