A teenage girl was taken into custody by authorities for allegedly contaminating food meant for her parents and cousin after being forbidden from meeting a boyfriend.
The 17-year-old girl reportedly admitted to adding a harmful substance known as chumbinho to three meals prepared by her mother in Nova Serrana, Minas Gerais, Brazil, on January 7. The toxic food was intended for her 35-year-old mother, 41-year-old father, and 36-year-old cousin, as per the Military Police.
Following a disagreement with her parents, the girl added the poison, typically used for exterminating rodents, to the meals. Major Renato Geraldo da Silva, a Military Police spokesperson, stated that the family disapproved of her romantic relationship, leading her to contaminate the food.
The girl disclosed that the poison container was already present in the house, mentioning the dispute that ensued when she left without permission. Police found small black granules believed to be the poison mixed into the meals.
The cousin began eating one of the contaminated meals but noticed an odd texture, prompting him to stop. He informed his uncle, who then alerted his wife about the tampered food. The parents were also warned and did not consume the poisoned meals. The cousin received medical attention, underwent treatment, and is in stable condition.
Authorities reported that the teenager acted out of anger due to her parents’ disapproval of her relationship. The police confirmed the detention and ongoing investigation into the case.
The girl, whose identity was not disclosed, was taken to the Civil Police station with her legal representative and is currently under the jurisdiction of the justice system.
In a separate incident, a woman in Australia was convicted of triple murder for serving a fatal meal containing death cap mushrooms to three family members. The convicted individual, Erin Patterson, received a lengthy prison sentence for the crime.
