The traditional landline service is gradually being replaced by modern digital calling, utilizing internet technology instead of conventional copper wires. Millions of households have already transitioned to broadband technology, and an additional 137 locations have been identified to move away from outdated copper cables.
BT’s Openreach service recently announced this update, mandating that numerous homes will soon need to opt for digital voice services when signing up for new broadband plans or switching providers. This initiative, known as the “Stop Sell” alert, is triggered once most homes near a broadband exchange gain access to ultrafast Full Fibre connectivity.
Following the implementation of “Stop Sell,” customers seeking to switch, upgrade, or alter their broadband or phone services will be required to adopt a new digital service over broadband. However, homes without Full Fibre connectivity on their streets can continue using copper cables until fiber optic cables are installed.
The shift to Digital Voice aims to enhance communication experiences for users, offering features like Multi Call, three-way calling, and call diversion to mobile numbers. Improved call quality is another benefit of Digital Voice, necessitating the use of compatible Digital Home phones.
According to BT, this transition is crucial to meet future communication demands and will have implications that cannot be overlooked. Concerns have been raised regarding older and vulnerable individuals without broadband access, as this change could potentially impact phone services during broadband outages. Telecom companies and Ofcom are closely monitoring these concerns.
Ofcom emphasized their commitment to enforcing obligations on providers who fail to meet customer requirements, ensuring compliance with regulations. James Lilley, Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Manager, highlighted the significance of the stop sell program in preparing the UK’s communication infrastructure for the future. The shift to future-proof technologies is imperative as the capabilities of copper networks diminish, necessitating a transition to modern communication technologies like Full Fibre.
