A young woman sought assistance at a local store after being stranded following a night out, only to be taken advantage of by an employee. Yaaqob Saleh, aged 20, left the woman distressed and in tears after assaulting her within the shop where he was employed. The incident occurred in March 2025 in Liverpool city center, as detailed in Liverpool Magistrates’ court.

The woman’s phone had died as she attempted to hail a taxi home, prompting her to enter Liverpool One Newsagents and Convenience Store on Whitechapel to seek help. Unfortunately, Saleh, who was working at the counter, exploited the situation. Despite the victim’s refusal, Saleh made inappropriate advances, touching her thigh and requesting a kiss. He proceeded to kiss her on the cheek and later touched her inappropriately, causing her significant distress.

Following the assault, the victim was left in a vulnerable state, curled up and crying. Eventually, after charging her phone and contacting a friend, she was able to leave the premises. In a statement shared in court, she expressed the profound impact the incident had on her emotional well-being, leading to feelings of anxiety, depression, and anger.

Saleh was found guilty of sexual assault, but his sentencing was postponed due to his legal representation issues. Despite attempts to delay the proceedings, the judge emphasized the need for a fair sentencing process. The victim’s emotional distress was highlighted during the trial, although the defense questioned the supporting evidence.

The sentencing hearing was adjourned to January 29 to allow Saleh to secure different legal representation, with bail granted under the condition that he does not contact the victim. The victim’s emotional response in court underscored the gravity of the situation, emphasizing the impact of the assault on her well-being.
