Christmas has always been a special time for me.

It’s the simple moments that hold the most value – spending time with loved ones, enjoying a good meal, and taking a moment to relax. However, as the holiday season fades and the New Year approaches, it’s natural to start contemplating the future. We ponder what the upcoming year will bring and the kind of society we aspire to live in.

This year is particularly significant. In a few months, the people of Scotland will be faced with a pivotal decision that will shape the course of our future. It’s not just another election; it’s a critical choice about the governance of Scotland and the path we want to follow. Leadership in Scotland holds immense importance as the decisions made in Holyrood directly impact the daily lives of all Scottish residents.

These decisions are crucial when individuals endure long waits in A&E, children struggle to receive adequate support in schools, young people feel compelled to seek opportunities elsewhere, and communities sense a decline in safety with public services faltering.

After nearly twenty years in power, the SNP has run out of justifications. Scotland’s healthcare system is overwhelmed, with lengthy waiting lists and exhausted staff. Educational standards are slipping, hindering the prospects of too many young individuals. Families are facing challenges while the government sidesteps accountability.

If the SNP’s performance were commendable, they would focus on their accomplishments during this election. Instead, they deflect attention to other issues like Westminster and England. This avoidance speaks volumes about their track record.

While Nigel Farage and Reform criticize Scotland’s situation, they offer no genuine solutions. Their approach thrives on discord and disunity, a politics that I wholly reject. What Scotland truly needs is not more chaos but effective leadership.

This election is about presenting a fresh option that Scotland has lacked for nearly two decades – a government dedicated to fundamental issues and committed to serving its people diligently.

A Scottish Labour administration will prioritize reducing NHS waiting times, supporting healthcare staff, and ensuring prompt access to GPs. We are dedicated to enhancing educational standards, providing every child with a strong foundation and securing a promising future for every young person. Our focus will also be on rebuilding safe communities, fostering employment opportunities, boosting the economy, and managing public funds responsibly.

I firmly believe that the challenges we face are a result of political decisions and can be remedied by making better choices. As we embark on this New Year, the decision is stark – more of the same or a new direction, excuses or solutions, division or leadership.

I am prepared to advocate for change. In May, I hope that the people of Scotland are prepared to embrace it. This is the year when Scotland shapes its destiny.

In recent times, the world has often seemed uncertain and perilous.

Ukrainians are fighting to safeguard their freedom against Russian aggression, while the people of Israel and Palestine are striving for lasting peace after years of conflict.

We have witnessed immense human suffering and significant political unrest worldwide. However, even in the darkest moments, we must not succumb to despair.

Especially during challenging times, we must cling to hope and intensify our commitment to peace. It is crucial to stand resolute against the growing fear and animosity that divide nations, communities, and individuals.

We must maintain faith in a brighter future and strive to bring it to fruition. As we bid farewell to this year and welcome the new one, let us all hope for a world that is fairer, safer, and more secure for everyone.

We’ve all experienced that dilemma – a full house with everyone wanting to watch something different on TV. Some prefer the Strictly special, others opt for a new high-quality drama, while some just want to scroll through festive movies. Democracy isn’t always straightforward; it’s about being bold and making choices despite opposition. If we manage to make a decision this Christmas, I’ll keep you informed.

The serene period between Christmas and New Year is a gift. With elections approaching in May, I’m cherishing moments with my children: walks, games, leisurely breakfasts. Work can wait. Taking this time to recharge, reassess priorities, and breathe is essential. Wishing you all rest, laughter, and a bit of tranquility before the new year commences.
