The leader of the trade union movement has cautioned that if people do not experience an improvement in their well-being by 2026, the Labour party risks losing more support to the Reform party. TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak emphasized the need for Keir Starmer to address the financial strains affecting households as citizens prepare to vote in upcoming elections across Scotland, Wales, and England. Nowak highlighted the importance for Labour to directly challenge Nigel Farage and cautioned that “working class individuals cannot afford to support Reform.”
Nowak stressed that the standard of living must enhance; otherwise, people will continue to be enticed by Reform’s empty promises. A recent Deltapoll survey for The Mirror disclosed that the cost of living ranks as the top concern for Britons, followed closely by the NHS and immigration issues, underscoring the urgency for Starmer to prioritize tackling these challenges in 2026. The survey indicated that 61% of individuals prioritize controlling living costs, with NHS improvements and immigration reduction following as key concerns.
Economic growth, crime reduction, and public service enhancements were ranked lower in terms of public priorities. Nowak highlighted the significant impact of economic uncertainties on people’s daily lives, citing concerns that hinder individuals from making financial decisions such as purchasing cars or planning vacations.
Regarding Reform’s stance on immigration, Nowak commended Starmer for denouncing the party’s policies as “racist.” He cautioned against divisive politics and emphasized the need for mainstream parties to address the frustrations driving some voters towards Reform without alienating them. Nowak underscored the potential negative repercussions of Farage’s influence on the working class, emphasizing the importance of steering the country in a direction away from such ideologies.
While acknowledging Labour’s past missteps, Nowak urged the party to champion its achievements and uphold its core values without hesitation. He emphasized the necessity for the Government to focus on improving living standards with unwavering dedication to demonstrate support for working-class communities.
Nowak dismissed speculations about internal party politics, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the welfare of struggling working people over political agendas. He highlighted Labour’s commitment to policies that enhance workers’ rights and stressed the importance of delivering significant changes that benefit the majority of the population.
The Prime Minister’s acknowledgment of the challenges posed by the cost of living in his recent address signifies the government’s commitment to addressing this critical issue. Plans for upcoming policies, including improvements in policing, welfare benefits, transportation costs, and energy expenses, aim to alleviate financial burdens on citizens.
The Mirror survey revealed that a significant portion of the population remains pessimistic about their financial outlook, highlighting the pressing need for effective measures to alleviate economic strains. Labour representatives have reaffirmed their dedication to alleviating the cost of living pressures through various initiatives aimed at supporting working-class families across the nation.
