Peace negotiations commenced today involving Ukraine, Russia, and the US. The talks in Abu Dhabi, marking almost four years since Moscow’s extensive invasion of war-torn Ukraine, are the first instance where officials from Donald Trump’s administration have met simultaneously with negotiators from Ukraine and Russia.

The discussions began on Friday and are scheduled to span two days, as confirmed by the UAE’s foreign ministry, aiming to facilitate dialogue and seek political resolutions to the crisis. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of addressing the future of Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region during the talks.

The meeting followed extensive overnight talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Trump’s envoys. The Kremlin emphasized that for a peace agreement to be reached, Kyiv must withdraw troops from the eastern areas annexed by Russia but never fully captured.

Zelenskyy expressed readiness to establish a free trade zone under Ukraine’s authority in the east, a proposal discussed with Trump in Davos, Switzerland. Despite uncertainties surrounding the outcome of the Abu Dhabi talks and persisting obstacles to peace, some view the negotiations as a positive step towards a potential agreement. Zelenskyy mentioned that while the status of occupied land in eastern Ukraine remains unresolved, peace proposals are nearing completion.

The Kremlin characterized the meeting as a “working group on security issues,” with the Russian delegation comprising military officials. The talks may extend into Saturday if deemed necessary. Additionally, Putin’s envoy Kirill Dmitriev will engage in discussions with Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff on economic matters.

Zelenskyy’s meeting with Trump in Davos was described as productive, emphasizing mutual efforts to reach a deal and make concessions to end the conflict. Russia’s military actions have resulted in capturing approximately one-fifth of Ukraine since hostilities began in 2014, along with a full-scale invasion in 2022. However, Moscow’s gains along the front line have come at a high cost, impacting the Russian economy due to the war and global sanctions. Ukraine faces financial challenges despite enhancing its arms production and requires Western military support, as indicated by reported troop desertions and draft-dodging.
