In a shocking incident captured on a Ring doorbell camera in Luton, a gunman was recorded shooting at a family’s front door while a woman inside dialed 999 in distress, pleading for help and mentioning the presence of children in the house.
This chilling footage was a crucial part of the UK’s largest-ever organized crime investigation, initiated after authorities successfully breached an encrypted phone network utilized by criminal organizations. The video shows a masked individual approaching the property, retrieving a double-barreled shotgun from a backpack, and firing at the entrance.
During the attack, one of the victims, speaking in broken English to a police dispatcher, reported the shooting and the presence of seven individuals, including children, inside the house. She instructed the children to stay away from the door as armed officers were dispatched to the scene.
The incident is featured in the latest episode of “24 Hours in Police Custody” named “The Secret Network,” which documents the efforts of Bedfordshire Police in dismantling an underworld “command and control platform” following the decryption of the secretive EncroChat communication system by French and Dutch authorities in 2020.
The episode follows detectives as they monitor criminals discussing illicit activities such as firearms and drug trafficking. One case involved Ethan Mitchell, who was linked to the weapon used in the door shooting after confirming to another individual on the platform that he possessed a shotgun. Mitchell, operating under the alias “frontrunner,” was ultimately sentenced to nine years for drug-related offenses.
As part of Operation Costello, a Bedfordshire Police initiative in response to the nationwide Operation Venetic probe targeting the Encrochat system, Mitchell’s arrest was part of a broader crackdown on criminal activities facilitated by the encrypted network.
The successful identification and apprehension of individuals involved in drug trafficking were made possible through the decoding of their user names on Encrochat. Notable arrests included Kamran Bashir, Blazej Holub, and Ibraz Iqbal, who were caught engaging in large-scale drug deals through the platform.
Bashir was apprehended at his workplace with Encrochat devices and cocaine, while Iqbal was discovered using business premises for drug storage. Holub’s role as a supplier was revealed through Encrochat messages, leading to his arrest upon arrival at Luton Airport.
The arrests of key figures like Bashir and Holub, who received lengthy prison sentences, were part of a broader operation that disrupted over 200 planned murders within the criminal network. The crackdown also resulted in the seizure of millions in illicit cash, substantial drug quantities, and numerous firearms, including machine guns.
The dismantling of EncroChat had far-reaching consequences, with prominent drug traffickers like Jordan Talbot facing heavy sentences based on incriminating messages exchanged on the compromised network. Other individuals, such as Gary Mitchell and Carl Stewart, were also apprehended through forensic evidence linking them to criminal activities shared on EncroChat.
The episode sheds light on the extensive efforts undertaken by law enforcement to combat organized crime networks exploiting encrypted communication platforms for illegal activities. The show “24 Hours in Police Custody: The Secret Network” airs on Channel 4 on Tuesdays at 9 pm.
