Henrik Stenson, renowned for his Ryder Cup success, faces uncertainty in securing spots in select DP World Tour events following his hefty fine for association with the breakaway group LIV Golf.
As reported by The Telegraph, a newly established rule stipulates that the 49-year-old Stenson no longer holds a guaranteed place in tournaments like the BMW PGA Championship, Dubai Desert Classic, and the Scottish Open due to revised qualification criteria.
Previously, golf legends like Stenson were granted exemptions for Rolex Series events based on their status, with top earners in the Tour’s money list securing spots in Category 5. However, they have now been downgraded to Category 11a, impacting their eligibility.
Stenson, currently ranked seventh in career earnings with over £28 million, was removed from LIV Golf in August and will return to the tour after serving a suspension. The rule change also affects players like Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, and Paul Casey, introducing uncertainty in their tournament qualifications.
Despite Stenson’s situation, there is a possibility of him being included in elite tournament lists or receiving sponsor invitations. However, reports indicate that a LIV player was recently denied participation in the Desert Classic in January.
In a contrasting development, Rory McIlroy, who abstained from joining the breakaway league, clinched victory in the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai, securing the Harry Vardon Trophy for the fourth consecutive year. He expressed pride in surpassing golf legend Seve Ballesteros and aims to achieve further success in the Order of Merits rankings.
