British tennis player Dan Evans expressed his disappointment and frustration over being left out of the doubles lineup for the 2021 Davis Cup Finals. Despite being a regular singles player, Evans felt insulted by the decision and hinted at quitting the team. He emphasized that his lack of regular doubles play on the tour should not be a determining factor in his selection for the Davis Cup.
In an interview with iNews, Evans stated that he found it insulting that he had never been chosen to play in the Davis Cup doubles matches. He argued that his performance in doubles, despite limited opportunities, was sufficient to merit selection. Evans suggested that team selection should be based on game style compatibility rather than doubles rankings.
Following his exclusion from the 2021 Davis Cup doubles matches, Evans raised concerns about the selection process, highlighting his unsuccessful attempts to be picked for doubles in the past. Despite his frustration, Evans acknowledged the captain’s authority in team selection and expressed his willingness to discuss alternative strategies with him.
In a subsequent Davis Cup match against Colombia, Evans and his partner Neal Skupski secured a victory in the doubles rubber, contributing to Great Britain’s overall success in the competition. However, Evans later missed the 2023 Davis Cup Finals due to an injury.
Meanwhile, the 2025 Davis Cup Finals did not feature the British team, as they were eliminated in the qualifying round by Japan. Italy advanced to the semi-finals, led by Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli, who defeated Austria. Berrettini’s win over Jurij Rodionov and Cobolli’s victory against Filip Misolic propelled Italy into the next round against Belgium.
