Several countries, including Germany, Canada, and the Netherlands, are deploying troops to Greenland for military exercises amid growing concerns about potential threats from various sources.
Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen confirmed the significant troop deployment following reports in the local media. Multiple NATO nations are increasing their presence in the mineral-rich Arctic region in response to heightened invasion threats from US President Donald Trump, a position supported by some members of the US Congress.
This action is also a reaction to the escalating aggression by Russia and China in the Arctic, which poses a significant concern for NATO.
Lund Poulsen emphasized the importance of security in the Arctic for the Kingdom and its allies, stating the necessity of strengthening operational capabilities in the region in cooperation with allied nations. The Danish Defense Forces, alongside Arctic and European allies, will assess how to enhance presence and exercise activities in the Arctic in the coming weeks.
The Danish defense ministry is dispatching Danish aircraft, naval vessels, and personnel for the training drills, which will involve hosting allied forces, conducting fighter jet operations, and carrying out maritime security duties, as reported by the Express US.
The troop deployment announcement follows a recent social media post by President Trump asserting the United States’ need for Greenland for national security purposes and highlighting concerns about potential Russian or Chinese control if the US does not act.
Denmark disclosed its deployment of advanced military personnel and equipment to Greenland on the same day. Swedish troops, including officers from the Swedish Armed Forces, are also en route to participate in exercises in Greenland, as confirmed by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
France has announced plans to establish a consulate in Greenland in response to Trump’s annexation rhetoric. French officials characterized this decision as a political gesture to show increased presence in Greenland and support for Denmark and NATO.
German officials have indicated that operations are being coordinated in Copenhagen to avoid US involvement and could commence shortly. German mountain troops, along with Navy and Air Force personnel, are considered primary candidates for the mission, according to BILD.
In November, Germany’s new Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft landed in Greenland. Earlier, German Defence Minister Boris Postorius called on NATO to protect the wider Greenland region against Russian and Chinese aggression in an article for Die Zeit.
Greenland has consistently expressed its desire for independence and opposition to any US takeover, firmly stating that the island is not available for purchase due to its rich mineral resources.
