A tragic incident occurred at an ICE detention center in Texas earlier this month, resulting in the death of a Cuban immigrant during a confrontation with guards. The local medical examiner indicated that the death is likely to be classified as a homicide.

While the US government asserted that Geraldo Lunas Campos’ death on January 3 was a result of a suicide attempt by the detainee during staff intervention, a witness claimed that Lunas Campos died after being handcuffed, tackled, and put in a chokehold by guards until he lost consciousness. The preliminary post-mortem report suggested that the cause of death was asphyxia due to chest and neck compression.

The conflicting accounts surrounding Lunas Campos’ death have raised concerns about the conditions in immigration jails, particularly at the El Paso facility where the incident occurred. ICE, which oversees the detention centers, initially did not disclose the circumstances leading to Lunas Campos’ death but later revised its account to confirm the suicide attempt.

The detainee’s death took place at Camp East Montana, a large tent facility on Fort Bliss Army base land. The facility, operated by a private contractor without prior experience in corrections, has raised questions about the supervision and actions of guards present during the incident.

Lunas Campos, a father of four and a registered sex offender, had been transferred to Camp Montana East following his arrest in New York. His criminal history made him eligible for deportation, leading to his detention by ICE. The circumstances surrounding his death, including the alleged struggle with guards, have prompted further investigation and scrutiny.

The medical examiner’s ruling of homicide could have significant implications for potential legal consequences for the guards involved. The family of Lunas Campos is seeking answers and justice, as they navigate the aftermath of his untimely death. The investigation into the incident continues, with various parties involved in seeking clarification and accountability.
