From thrilling new dramas and gritty documentaries through to glossy entertainment shows, reality binge-watches, returning series and all the best soaps, there’s always something to keep us glued to the small screen. If you’re wondering what to watch tonight, I’ve handpicked the best of the box, selected from all the traditional networks like BBC and ITV, as well as streamers like Netflix, Prime, Disney+ and Apple TV.

Tonight, iconic actress Nicola Walker is back on the Marine Homicide Unit in Annika, medics are saving lives in Wales’ biggest hospital, beloved treasures are restored in The Repair Shop and Tracy is hit by a pang of guilt in Emmerdale.

See below for my top telly picks.

Nicola Walker could read out the phone book (remember those?) and the audience would be completely gripped. She returns for another series of this moody, Scotland-set crime thriller as the excellent cop DI Annika Strandhed. Annika works for the Marine Homicide Unit where she solves seemingly endless brutal murders that wash up in Scotland’s waters. Throughout the series, Annika confides in the audience, breaking the fourth wall to share her wry observations on the cases and her life. As this episode starts, she escapes a noisy pub to tell us about a poem about a Norwegian woman who marries a man who turns into a seal. They have a child and he steals it, then both he and the child get shot. “This is about fateful parenting,” says Annika, “which is very much my world.” It’s a sinister nod to things to come.

Almost immediately she learns that a phone has been handed in to MHU with a recording on it of a horrible drowning. The pressure is on for Annika and the team to track down the murderer. Meanwhile, Annika must manage her brilliant yet unconventional team, as well as her equally brilliant but complex teenage daughter Morgan (Silvie Furneaux). Annika struggles to find the opportunity to share a deep secret with Michael (Jamie Sives) that could change his life and their relationship forever. Blair (Katie Leung) and Tyrone (Ukweli Roach) each share some important and shocking news of their own.

Another pacy and emotional fly-on-the-wall hospital series, this time following medics and patients at Wales’s largest hospital. There are life-saving operations, difficult dilemmas, strained resources and heart-rending outcomes as cameras follow the operating team at The University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. Consultant surgeon Stuart Quine is preparing to perform a pioneering operation to remove a rare tumour from father-of-two, Terry. But the operation has only been done a handful of times in the UK and never before in Wales.

Meanwhile, 27-year-old Courtney has reached the top of consultant Ravi Nannapaneni’s waiting list. She has a rare condition called Chiari Malformation, meaning part of her brain is pushing down into her spinal canal, causing numbness in her feet and legs. If not treated, it could lead to double vision and limb paralysis. Ravi prepares for a delicate surgery, to remove a small part of Courtney’s brain to relieve the pressure on her spinal cord.

An unfinished family project grabs the attentions of the experts in this latest treasure-fixing instalment. When siblings Michelle and Paul were kids, their petrolhead dad Brian built them a full working children’s jeep that they used to drive to and from school. Brian wanted to upgrade the car for his grandson, but sadly died before he could complete the task – now experts Mark and Dom must get it road-worthy again.

Annette from Northern Ireland is calling upon the skillset of soft toy restorers Amanda and Julie to bring back a precious piece of her childhood. When she was a child during the Troubles, she was sent to a host family to escape the conflict and given a Dutch doll – but the doll has suffered some wear and tear. Rebecca hopes that master hatter Jayesh can work his magic on her authentic Fez that she bought years ago in Egypt, while Chris asks for help to restore his sculpture carved out of soap.

Tracy’s hit with a sudden wave of guilt and confesses to Vanessa about her stealing. Tracy’s touched when Vanessa gives her an envelope of cash to replace Pollard’s missing money. Tracy replaces the missing money but gaslights Pollard into thinking he misplaced it. Liam reveals that he’s reviewing all of John’s work. John opens up to Vic about some of the mistakes he’s made as a medic. Jacob is mortified to catch Sarah in the middle of an intimate afternoon with Kammy.

As Martin’s loved ones take in the sight of his destroyed stall, Stacey swears to Lily that she will find out who is responsible for this cruel act. Jack warns Stacy to leave it to the police, but she’s convinced she has all the evidence she needs to confront the culprit. Ross is hellbent on keeping Vicki in Walford, even though she’s already booking flights home. Ross turns to Ian to try to manipulate him into persuading her.

Debbie attends a private doctor’s appointment and explains that she’s suffered a string of incidents. As she describes each one, we see the incidents in flashback. Kevin tries to make amends with Jack, but Jack brushes him off. In the Rovers, Kevin and Tyrone, Tim and Ronnie, and George and Eileen take part in the darts competition. Tyrone returns home and is shocked to find Dorin there. Fiz explains that Alina’s house has been flooded and Dorin is staying for now.
