An iconic stateside radio DJ has died from lung cancer. Jed Gould, also known as Jed The Fish has died at the age of 69 it has been revealed. He was best known for his long-running drive-time segment on Alt-Rock station KROQ. He held the afternoon slot between 1978 and 2012.
The news was confirmed on his Instagram account, where a statement read: “At 6am on April 14, 2025, the world lost one its most unique and brilliant personalities. Jed the Fish passed peacefully away in his beloved home, and the world will never be the same. RIP Jed, go be with Alice.”
Tributes were paid following the news. Among them was KROQ DJ Allie Mc Kay, who wrote: “You loveable wackadoodle! Thanks for being such a huge part of growing up in LA, and one of the nicest people at the station. RIP Jed. There will never be another like you.”
KROQ personality Poorman also said: “Jed Um Fish Um… Dude you are the best! It was my privilege to be able to work with you at KAY RoCkkkkk all those years! Very few could do radio at your level brother and friend.”
Mike Catherwood, who was known as Psycho Mike during his time on KROQ, shared his own tribute on Instagram. he wrote: “This morning, Jed the Fish passed away. Many people try hard to be unique or even eccentric, and Jed was genuinely that without effort.
“He supported me throughout my time at @kroq and like @thekevinryder and @bean9, it felt surreal because I grew up with their voices in my head. The power of conformity has grown stronger by the day and Jed quite capably defended himself against it. Rest in peace, my friend.”
Current KROQ DJ Megan Holiday also told Variety: ” He is one of the kindest, funniest and the most unique people that I’ve ever met.
“He was so inspiring and endlessly creative, and he had an infectious energy. He could light up an arena. I just loved him very much and was grateful for the time we got to spend together.'”
During his time as a presenter, Jed interviewed a number of major names in the industry, including Sting and David Bowie.
His bawdy humour entertained listeners during his time on the airwaves. He was also known for often breaking new and unheard bands onto the scene, playing their tunes before they became mainstream.
Jed is thought to have been the first ever DJ in the United States to play Depeche Mode, Duran Duran and The Pretenders.
After leaving KROQ, he was briefly heard on KLOS. However, he soon returned to KROQ via the station’s HD-2 Roq of the ’80s feed.
Throughout his career he bagged a number of accolades. Among them was the Billboard Modern Rock Personality of the Year award, which he won twice. He also won the Radio & Records Local Modern Rock Personality of the Year.
