The Handmaid’s Tale is back on our screens for its final season, introducing a fresh face to the cast.

Josh Charles has stepped into the role of Commander Gabriel Wharton, the father-in-law of Nick Blaine (portrayed by Max Minghella).

Commander Wharton, a widower, is fiercely protective of his pregnant daughter Rose (played by Carey Cox), and keeps a watchful eye on Nick, whom he distrusts due to his past relationship with June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss).

Fans are eager to learn more about Charles, the latest addition to the show, and his life off-screen, reports the Mirror US.

Born in Baltimore, 53 year old Charles is married to Sophie Flack, a former ballet dancer. The couple tied the knot in 2013 in an intimate Manhattan ceremony, followed by a dinner at Il Cantinori in Greenwich Village, New York City, as reported by Us Weekly.

Despite keeping their relationship largely private, it’s believed they were together for some time before saying ‘I do’. They have two children, welcoming their son in 2014 and their daughter four years later in 2018.

Flack, now 41, was a ballerina with the New York City Ballet for nine years before transitioning to writing and other ventures. Her experiences with the dance company from 2001 to 2009 inspired her novel Bunheads, published in 2011.

She’s embraced her creative flair once again, this time as a jewellery designer and shared the exciting news on Instagram.

Showing off her new business with a charming video tour of the NoMad studio offices, she penned: “Looking to create the bespoke piece of your dreams or reset an existing piece?” And followed it up with an inviting offer: “We got you. Book a free jewelry consult with Sophie at our NoMad studio.”

Flack has also let fans peek into her personal life, sharing an adorable video featuring her renowned hubby while they savoured a meal out.

Captioning the delightful snippet, she wrote: “Find yourself a partner who makes a 16-course Omakase fun, when cod intestines is the amuse-bouche.”

Her spouse Charles isn’t unfamiliar with the limelight, celebrated for his role as lawyer Will Gardner on The Good Wife—a performance that snagged him two Emmy nods.

His impressive resume spans across beloved works like Sports Night, Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead, and he’s fondly remembered for playing Knox Overstreet in Dead Poets Society—a character he nodded to in Taylor Swift’s music video for Fortnight from her The Tortured Poets Department’s album.

2024 saw him delving into the world of espionage alongside The Handmaid’s Tale’s Elisabeth Moss in Hulu’s thrilling series The Veil.

Other feathers in his acting cap include significant parts in We Own This City, The Power, Away, Medal of Honor, and The Loudest Voice.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 will be coming to Prime Video on May 3 and Channel 4 later in 2025 in the UK
