‘Marks and Spencer has upped its game with these chic spring to summer pieces’

As a fashion writer and regular peruser of M&S’s fashion section, I’ve developed a keen eye for those pieces that will be an instant sell out or viral sensation, as well as those with the most wearability that will stay in your wardrobe for years to come. Marks and Spencer has really found its stride over the past few seasons, with shoppers saying the retailer has ‘upped their game’ with a range of seriously on-trend pieces available in their latest edit.

With spring finally in full swing and summer on the horizon, I’ve scoured the site and pulled together my top M&S picks, from items that are as comfortable as they are chic, to wardrobe staples that will stand the test of time.

Elsewhere, head of shopping Zoe Cripps has been eyeing up some pieces at Roman and Nobody’s Child if you’re looking for even more spring and summer style inspiration. But with everything from no-iron shirts perfect for your summer holiday, to denim dresses and lightweight jackets, M&S really does seem to have something for everyone this season. Here are my top picks:

Romantic, ethereal, and endlessly flattering, this lace skirt is a dream for the warmer months. I love the tiered silhouette – it adds just the right amount of volume without feeling bulky. The elasticated waist is ideal for comfort (especially if you’re like me and appreciate a bit of give around the tummy area), but according to shopper reviews, the ‘elastic is not very tight’ so if you’re between sizes, do consider sizing down.

This skirt has been a hit ever since it appeared on the most recent M&S TV advert, and it’s easy to see why. It’s definitely giving off those boho, Coachella, Sienna Miller 90s vibes. You could keep it classic and pair with denim or suede to really lean into that vibe, or contrast the delicate lace with an oversized graphic tee for an edgier look. In summer, a super simple cami top makes for a great beach outfit, too.

If there’s one piece that ticks all the boxes – easy to style, breezy to wear, and requires zero ironing – it’s this crinkle-textured shirt. The curved hemline gives a lovely shape when untucked, and the weight of the fabric makes it hang beautifully.

Coming in under £30 at £29.50, it’s available in cream and soft green, with shoppers being thrilled about the fact it doesn’t need to be pressed. One said: “Great blouse. Nice and light material and doesn’t need to be ironed! Great fit. Ordered the cream but may order the green as well.”

It’s the kind of shirt that looks effortlessly polished even when you’re running late – the only problem, which has been echoed by customers, is that it doesn’t come in more colours. “Beautiful colour and material,” one said, adding: “washes beautifully and doesn’t need to be ironed. I wish it came in more colours as I’d love another one.”

This dress is such a gorgeous design and is the kind of piece that gets compliments every time you wear it. Priced at £49.50, it looks as though it could be from Nobody’s Child or Next, and is so in line with current trends, both with denim and tie detailing proving to be popular.

Made from 100% cotton, the dress is cut in a regular fit with three-quarter sleeves that are slightly puffed for a touch of volume. The V-neckline is super flattering, and what’s even more exciting is the fact that it has pockets.

So far it’s mostly flown under the radar, with just one shopper having reviewed it so far. They loved the piece but did mention they had to size up, which may be something to consider if you’re ordering online. They wrote: “I had to go a size up as the 20 was a bit tight but the quality of the fabric is beautiful. I brought it to wear for a friend’s 60th birthday celebration next week. Can definitely be dressed up or dressed down. I saw something similar to this in another store for triple the price. Well done to M&S for upping their game!”

I adore a throw-on-and-go summer dress, and this bandeau number is exactly that. It’s cut in an easy regular fit, featuring a drop waist which is definitely an emerging trend for 2025, and has added stretch for a comfortable feel. At £29.50, it’s an affordable wardrobe addition that’s available in a dreamy tomato red or classic black, both of which are perfect for dressing up or down to suit the occasion.

It’s available in sizes 6–18 in a regular midi length, though I’m hoping they expand to include petite and tall soon. Great for avoiding pesky strap tan lines, it’s a brilliant base for layering up with oversized shirts or a denim jacket.

Who knew that peplum hems would see a comeback in 2025? Certainly not me. But they’ve come a long way since the ‘Disney kid’ vibes of the 2010s, now offering a fresh and fun way to accentuate your waistline. Polka dots are totally timeless so are expected to be as popular as ever for summer, with the Grand National style award winner having worn a dress in a similar design.

As for the M&S top, the ruched bodice and peplum shape flatter the waist while the bandeau neckline feels fresh for summer. Perfect with wide-leg trousers or a midi skirt for a dressier daytime event, or add gold hoops and heels for a summer evening out. Bonus points for the shirred back, because we still want to feel comfortable while looking glam.

Another polka dot number I’ve seen all over my social media is this Pure Cotton Square Neck Polka Dot Bow Top. At £35, its square neckline and puff sleeves are so feminine, with the bows at the shoulders really setting it off. It’s super whimsical and romantic, ideal for wearing with a puffy midi skirt, or as the upper half of a ‘jeans and a nice top’ combo.

Speaking on the top, one shopper wrote: “Love love this top! It fits beautifully but I wouldn’t want it to be any tighter. I would say I’d like it more without the bows, in person they’re a little childish but perhaps it just needs the correct styling.”

Animal print is never out of style, but this season, it feels especially on trend. These wide-leg trousers are so easy to style, whether it’s with a simple black tank, a crisp white shirt, and even over a swimsuit.

The fabric is breezy, doesn’t need ironing, and the drawstring waistband keeps things super comfortable. If you’re on the taller side, the length might run a little long, but the relaxed silhouette still works beautifully.

Commenting on the trousers, one shopper wrote: “Animal print is everywhere this season. These are very wearable. However I often buy a long length as tall but had to reorder a regular and even then they are still touching the ground. Good value for money.”

As well as leopard print, the trousers come in cow and tiger varieties, but shoppers are calling for even more prints. One added: “Absolutely love these trousers, the material is really lovely you can wash and wear, No ironing required. They look so nice on, zebra print ones would be lovely.”

A solid transitional jacket is essential this time of year, and this suedette style is set to be a go-to. The neutral shade is versatile and the fabric detailing – especially the soft gathering at the seams and cuffs – is exceptional. It’s soft, flattering, and ideal for layering over both dresses and denim. If you’re building a capsule wardrobe, this is a smart, stylish investment.

Shoppers have done nothing but rave about it, with one writing: “This is a great jacket in a lovely neutral colour that goes with everything. Especially like the way it’s constructed – the fabric gathers at the front and back seam and cuffs shows a lot of thought has gone into designing it.”

“I bought this jacket for myself, I found it true to size, very comfortable, colour goes with most things, material soft,” said another while a third penned: “Great lightweight jacket for spring. Good quality and styling. Will look great with jeans or a dress.”
