A 63-year-old British tourist has died after a horror fall from a historic monument’s viewing platform. The Briton fell to his death from the Segovia aqueduct in Spain. Emergency services were called at around 1.05pm local time after horrified witnesses reported seeing the man tumble from an observation deck.
Tragically, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The tourist reportedly plunged from the Roman aqueduct after sitting on an observation deck at the monument’s viewing platform. He reportedly fell backwards before he tragically died.
The platform the Brit fell from is situated near the cities Obispo Gandásegui Street. Emergency crews rushed to the scene after receiving multiple desperate calls from horrified onlookers, but their attempts to save the tourist tragically failed.
The 63-year-old is believed to have travelled to Segovia last Thursday with two other visitors. The historic city of Segovia, northwest of Madrid, is famous for its rich architecture – medieval walls and Gothic buildings.
Segovia is best known for its iconic grand Roman aqueduct, which was built in the first century AD. The huge structure has more than 160 arches and is well-preserved despite its age.
At it’s tallest point the aqueduct is 28.5 meters and it stretches a stunning 794 meters in length. It was originally built to move water for miles from fresh springs in mountains to the city.
This tragic death has not been the first time a holidaymaker has plunged to death while in Spain. A 19-year-old tragically died last year after falling to her death from an Ibiza hotel.
The Brit was pronounced dead the the scene after falling “by accident” from the sixth floor of a seafront four-star adult-only hotel – in the party resort of San Antonio called Hotel Vibra District.
Emergency services rushed to the hotel but they were unbale to save her, due to the extent of her injuries, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another British tourist died after a horror fall from a hotel in Mallorca last year. The 28-year-old plunged 15-feet to his death, in front of his girlfriend after a night out.
The traveller fell over a wall by the entrance of the four-star Reverence Mare Hotel in Palmanova, near Magaluf. He tragically landed on the ground next to the hotel’s spa pool and his girlfriend was said to have had to be treated for an anxiety attack later in the day.
