It appears that movie audiences worldwide have developed a keen interest in the film Obsession, much like the main character’s intense fixation and murderous tendencies.
As per a report from The Wrap on Sunday, the horror flick has officially surpassed the $500 million mark in global box office revenue, marking it as the first original film of the 2020s to achieve this milestone.
This achievement sets Obsession ahead of Pixar’s 2023 animated success Elemental, which earned $494.6 million worldwide, making it the top-grossing original movie in the post-pandemic era, as reported by The Express Tribune.
Despite its modest budget, the film about a woman consumed by obsessive violence due to a man’s selfish supernatural wish for her affections has now become the highest-grossing movie produced for less than $1 million US.
With a production budget of only $750,000, Obsession has outperformed the 1973 martial arts classic Enter the Dragon, made with an $850,000 budget, which earned $400 million US through multiple re-releases.
Written and directed by 26-year-old Curry Barker, the film premiered on May 15 and became the first movie since E.T. to witness a weekly increase in box office earnings during its initial three weeks in theaters.
By the conclusion of its theatrical run in the US on Aug. 14, Obsession had collected $263.4 million domestically and an additional $238.1 million internationally, totaling over $501.5 million globally and still climbing, as per Box Office Mojo.
A release in South Korea is scheduled, according to The Wrap.
