Two young brothers, aged one and two, tragically drowned in a First Nation community in the Island Lake region of eastern Manitoba, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The incident was reported to police on Wednesday afternoon when the children were taken to the Garden Hill Anisininew Nation’s nursing station. Family members discovered the toddlers in a nearby lake and brought them to the nursing station with the assistance of First Nation safety officers. Despite efforts to save them, the boys were pronounced dead at the nursing station.
Authorities believe that the boys wandered away from their home and entered the lake, ruling out any suspicion of foul play. Alex McDougall, the grand chief of Anisininew Okimawin, which represents the four First Nations in the Island Lake region, expressed condolences and solidarity with the grieving family and community. The family had taken precautions by erecting a fence to prevent direct access to the water.
The heartbreaking incident has left the Garden Hill Anisininew Nation in shock and mourning. McDougall mentioned that everyone is devastated, and efforts are underway to provide support and resources to the family during this difficult time. Garden Hill is located approximately 475 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg.

Chris Hipolito revealed that there was a previous drowning incident during the spring ice breakup on Island Lake, along with several near-misses. Expressing empathy for the affected family and community, Hipolito emphasized the importance of offering support and allowing them space to grieve and heal from the tragedy.
