The debut of the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham encountered a setback during the start. The opening day, involving practice and qualifying for Canada’s sole IndyCar event, was called off on Friday due to incomplete track preparations, preventing the final safety assessment. To compensate, organizers plan to compress the missed track sessions into the schedule for Saturday.
This marks the first year that Markham has hosted the event, following its relocation from Toronto’s Exhibition Place, the event’s home since its inception in 1986. Expressing disappointment, IndyCar president J. Douglas Boles stated that despite substantial on-site assistance, the track build was not finalized on time.
Local attendees Mark Coburn from Kitchener and Scott Stobo from Waterloo, who have been race regulars for two decades, expressed mixed feelings about the postponement. Coburn emphasized the importance of safety, acknowledging the delay’s necessity for a secure track. Stobo lamented the lack of on-track action throughout the day, crucial for attracting fans, particularly in the region.
The move from downtown Toronto to Markham was jointly announced by IndyCar and the City of Markham in September. The new circuit, constructed for the first time this week, spans Kennedy Road, Enterprise Boulevard, the Unionville GO tracks, and Highway 407. Notable incomplete features included a pedestrian bridge over Enterprise Boulevard and safety fencing enhancements for marshals.
The government investments, totaling $5 million, and Markham’s $12 million capital spending demonstrated substantial financial backing for the event. Spectators at the IndyCar race in Canada enjoy free entry on Fridays, with donations to the Make-A-Wish Foundation encouraged. The event drew thousands of fans amid warm temperatures, though limited shade and seating posed challenges compared to the former location.
Off-track activities proceeded as scheduled on Friday, including driver autograph sessions. Saturday’s schedule promises an action-packed day, featuring IndyCar practice sessions and qualifying rounds. Boles expressed confidence in the circuit’s potential for an exciting race day and extended gratitude to the City of Markham for its support.
In addition to IndyCar races, the weekend program includes the USF2000 Championship, USF Pro 2000, Radical Cup Canada, and NASCAR Canada Series events. Despite initial considerations of returning for additional days, Stobo hinted at concluding their visit after the day’s experiences.
