Robin Williams’s children have reactivated their late father’s Instagram account to counter the surge of unauthorized AI replicas of him. The iconic actor and comedian passed away on August 11, 2014, at 63, with an autopsy revealing Lewy body dementia.

In a recent post, Zak, Zelda, and Cody Williams expressed their intention to maintain a secure and genuine space on the “therobinwilliams” Instagram account, showcasing their father’s legacy with authenticity and warmth. They highlighted their aim to share his unique talent and humor, reminiscing about the moments that brought laughter to many lives.

Throughout his illustrious career in film, television, and stage, Williams left an indelible mark with performances in notable works such as Mork & Mindy, Good Morning Vietnam, Dead Poets Society, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Jumanji. His stellar acting earned him an Academy Award for Good Will Hunting and a special Golden Globe Award for his portrayal of Genie in Aladdin.

The proliferation of AI-generated content featuring Williams, including podcasts, stand-up comedy routines, and viral videos like his commentary on dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, has raised concerns. OpenAI’s video creation app, Sora, contributed to these replicas before its shutdown in March following backlash from families of public figures.

Zelda Williams, an actor and director, has been vocal in condemning AI recreations of her father, urging fans to refrain from sharing such content as it goes against his wishes. She emphasized the family’s initiative to combat AI exploitation by reactivating Robin Williams’s Instagram to offer genuine glimpses into his life.

While some, like actor Matthew Lawrence, have expressed interest in reviving Williams’s voice using AI for special projects, they stress the importance of obtaining the family’s consent. Similar concerns have been raised by Bernice King, daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., against the unwarranted use of her father’s likeness in AI creations.

The evolving landscape of AI replication has extended to deceased individuals like Val Kilmer, whose estate authorized his digital representation in the upcoming film As Deep As the Grave, underscoring the complexities surrounding AI ethics and consent.
