Plant enthusiast Klaus Koehler made an uncommon discovery in July while exploring the Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park near Iqaluit. He stumbled upon a plant species rarely observed in the Arctic, suggesting potential implications for the presence of invasive species in Northern regions as temperatures rise.
Koehler encountered a brownish weed-like plant known as bladderwort when he reached into a pond. Despite its unassuming appearance, the carnivorous plant is adorned with small black bladders containing partially digested flies. Typically found in more temperate climates, bladderwort seldom ventures into Arctic territories.
The only other documented instance of bladderwort in the area dates back to 2012, when scientists located samples outside Kimmirut, approximately 120 kilometers southwest of Iqaluit. This finding was documented in the scientific journal Phytokeys. During three expeditions to the Arctic, the research team uncovered over 30 previously unidentified plant species in the region.
Koehler believes this discovery could indicate a shift in climate conditions. While the Arctic currently hosts few invasive species due to its harsh climate, warming temperatures are creating a more favorable environment for non-native plants to thrive, potentially altering the ecosystem.
Paul Sokoloff, a senior research assistant at Ottawa’s Museum of Nature who participated in the 2012 study, shares Koehler’s concerns. He highlights the risk of plant seeds being introduced to Arctic ecosystems by birds, cargo ships, and visitors’ footwear.
Invasive species, such as the Eurasian-originating grass phragmites, have caused ecological damage in other parts of Canada for years. Sokoloff emphasizes the importance of preventing invasive plants from outcompeting native species in Arctic environments.
While Koehler’s discovery is not expected to have a significant impact, Sokoloff warns that other plant species could pose a threat. A study by scientists from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in 2025 identified over 2,500 species with the potential to invade the Arctic region due to climate change.
Koehler intends to collect a sample of the Iqaluit bladderwort for further examination by the Museum of Nature, aiming to enhance scientific understanding of the plant’s northward expansion.
