After unknowingly triggering her son Simon’s severe allergic reaction to cashews at just 18 months old, Morgan Klachefsky rushed him to the Winnipeg HSC Children’s Emergency Department. The incident revealed Simon’s life-threatening cashew and pistachio allergy, leaving Morgan overwhelmed by the realization of the constant threat to her child’s life.
Determined to protect Simon, Morgan immersed herself in educating both herself and Simon’s caregivers. Despite her efforts, fear gripped her, leading to a struggle in trusting others with Simon’s safety. However, Simon’s courage gradually inspired Morgan to address her mental health and relinquish some control, allowing him more freedom.
Over time, as Simon grew more independent and responsible, Morgan taught him to manage his allergies and EpiPen. She emphasized the importance of vigilance and trust, preparing him for situations where he must advocate for his safety. Eventually, Simon’s desire to attend sleepaway camp prompted Morgan to take a leap of faith, trusting in his knowledge and the support systems in place.
Their experience at camp marked a pivotal moment of letting go and building resilience for both mother and son. Despite the ongoing challenges of managing Simon’s allergies, they navigate each step with strengthened resolve, relying on their support network and refusing to let fear dictate their lives.
