Authorities have advised residents to leave their homes after an “object” was found following a terrorism-related arrest. A 21-year-old man was apprehended for allegedly attempting to join a banned group, specifically Daesh, violating the Terrorism Act 2000.
A substantial police presence, including officers from Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE), Counter Terrorism Policing South West (CTPSW), and Avon and Somerset Police, was seen in Francombe Grove, Horfield. The operation, led by CTPSE, led to the discovery of a “suspicious item” during a property search.
As a precautionary measure, a “small number” of residents in nearby properties were advised to evacuate while the police investigate the object. The arrested individual is currently in police custody, according to Bristol Live.
Chief Inspector Keith Smith of Avon and Somerset Police assured the public that the operation was planned in advance and that there will be increased police presence in Horfield. He emphasized the safety measures being taken and urged the community to cooperate with the ongoing police activity.
A spokesperson for CTPSE confirmed the arrest of the man in connection with a terrorism offense. The 21-year-old from Bristol was taken into custody on suspicion of trying to join a proscribed organization (Daesh), in violation of the Terrorism Act 2000. The investigation is ongoing, and the area has been cordoned off due to the discovery of a suspicious item in a residential property.
