A 75-year-old British tourist tragically passed away following a swimming incident at El Duque beach in Tenerife. Lifeguards aided the individual after he was rescued from the water at Costa Adeje’s beach in the southern part of the island yesterday. Medical professionals, including a doctor and nurse from a local health center, alongside paramedics, tried to revive the man after he suffered cardiac arrest.

Despite the efforts, they were unsuccessful in resuscitating the pensioner, and he was declared deceased at the scene. The deceased, initially identified as a 70-year-old foreigner, has been confirmed to be a 75-year-old British citizen who recently celebrated his birthday.

El Duque beach is a popular urban beach with a Blue Flag certification known for its strong currents. It remains unclear whether the man was alone or accompanied by others during the incident.

An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted in Santa Cruz, the island’s capital, to determine the cause of death, whether it was related to drowning or a pre-existing health condition.

A spokesperson from a regional government emergency response center stated, “The man passed away after being rescued at El Duque beach while experiencing cardiac arrest. Despite the initial assistance from lifeguards, subsequent resuscitation efforts by medical personnel were unsuccessful.”

The authorities were alerted just after 12:50 pm yesterday, with local police and National Police involved in preparing a report for the local investigating court regarding the incident.

Tenerife previously experienced sea-related tragedies during stormy weather late last year. In one incident, four individuals lost their lives, and three others were injured on December 7 after being swept into the sea at natural pools on the Los Gigantes cliffs. Another incident a month earlier resulted in the deaths of three people and injuries to 15 others due to powerful waves.
