A significant portion of the UK, encompassing 90 counties, is expected to be blanketed in snow reaching depths of up to 72cm as per the latest weather maps. These forecasts indicate a looming spell of freezing conditions and snow within the next two weeks. WXCharts meteorologists have projected this wintry scenario, revealing that nearly all counties, except two, may experience widespread snow cover between January 31 and February 1.

The data suggests that snowfall intensity will escalate on January 31, progressing southwards into the early hours of February 1, potentially enveloping most parts of the UK. Scotland is anticipated to bear the brunt of the snowfall, with a substantial 72cm predicted to accumulate in Cairngorms National Park at the peak of the weather system.

Northern Ireland and Wales are also set to face severe wintry conditions, with only Hampshire and Cornwall likely to evade the snowfall depicted on the weather maps. Cities in Scotland such as Aberdeen and Dundee could witness over a foot of snow, while further south, Newcastle might see up to 25cm of snow accumulation.

Major cities across the UK, including Belfast and Cardiff, are poised to be significantly impacted, with London expected to receive approximately 2cm of settled snowfall, according to reports. This snowy spell will coincide with freezing temperatures nationwide, with most regions waking up to sub-zero conditions on the morning of January 31.

In certain areas, temperatures could plummet as low as -6C. The Met Office’s extended forecast for January 23 to February 1 also hints at potential snowfall and icy temperatures across the country.

The Met Office often emphasizes the complexity of forecasting snow beyond a few days in advance. It elaborates that despite the disruptive nature of even a small amount of snow in temperate regions like the UK, predicting its occurrence poses significant challenges due to various factors such as elevation, proximity to the coast, and precipitation intensity.
