A waste collector has recently revealed the proper disposal method for empty crisp packets and chocolate wrappers. The UK population consumes over eight billion bags of crisps annually, with projections indicating this number could surpass 11 billion by 2030, equating to more than 30 million packets per day. Additionally, the UK ranks among the top five nations globally in chocolate consumption, resulting in a substantial quantity of chocolate wrappers being discarded.

Despite advancements in food packaging recycling in the UK, the recycling process for crisp and chocolate wrappers remains challenging due to their composition of multiple layers of polypropylene, polyethylene, and aluminum coatings categorized as “soft plastics.” While many local councils now accept hard plastics for recycling, the recycling of soft plastics on a large scale remains limited.

Environmental organization WRAP acknowledges the need for more extensive recycling collection programs for plastic bags and wrappings to be implemented nationwide. Recycling policies vary across UK councils, with some councils accepting soft plastics for recycling. It is advisable to verify the specific recycling guidelines of your local council.

Renowned TikTok personality, known as The No1 Binman, clarified the recycling protocol for crisp and chocolate wrappers. According to The No1 Binman, these items should not be placed in regular recycling bins. Instead, crisp packets can be recycled at supermarkets, where dedicated bins are provided. Alternatively, they can be disposed of in general waste bins for regular collection.

In a 2023 report, the BBC highlighted the discovery of vintage crisp packets dating back to the 1960s on a Norfolk beach, underscoring the enduring lifespan of plastics. Among the findings were Golden Wonder crisp packets priced at 5d and 2d Spangles sweets.
