Households are being advised to be extra cautious with their waste bins as the warmer weather can lead to the emergence of maggots. The higher temperatures accelerate the decomposition of food scraps, attracting flies that lay eggs in the bins, potentially causing infestations to develop rapidly.
According to Wheeldon Brothers, this issue becomes more prevalent during the spring and summer seasons. James Ward emphasized that as temperatures rise, flies become more active, increasing the likelihood of bins becoming breeding grounds if not properly managed.
To prevent maggots from infesting bins, ensuring that the bin lid is securely closed is crucial in preventing flies from accessing the waste and laying eggs. Ward highlighted that properly sealing the lid is a simple yet effective defense mechanism.
Loose food waste is a primary factor contributing to maggot presence. Ward recommended that food waste should always be bagged or wrapped before disposal to reduce odors and minimize attractiveness to flies.
Maintaining a clean bin is essential as any residues left behind can facilitate recurring issues. Regularly cleaning the bin helps eliminate the conditions necessary for maggot development.
The waste specialist also noted that heat accelerates the breakdown process, making infestations more probable. Keeping bins in shaded areas can help slow down this process.
In case maggots appear, the specialist suggested pouring boiling water directly onto them as a quick and effective solution, emphasizing caution when handling hot water.
