At the age of 13, a young girl ventured out from her home to meet a person she thought was a trusted friend, only to unknowingly step into one of the most disturbing cases of child abduction in online history.

During the early 2000s, when online platforms were largely unregulated, Alicia Kozakiewicz connected with an individual on the internet who claimed to be her age. This person, who was actually 31 years old, later introduced Alicia to another acquaintance.

Through daily conversations, shared interests, and emotional bonding, Alicia and her new online friend developed a close relationship over time.

On New Year’s Day in 2002, Alicia pretended to be unwell and retreated to her bedroom, only to sneak out to meet her online companion in person.

Reflecting on the incident, Alicia later recounted in a personal account for the BBC that the man she met on New Year’s Day was the one who abducted her. The situation turned violent immediately after their encounter, with Alicia recalling how she was forcefully restrained and threatened.

As they drove away from her hometown, Alicia harbored hopes that the ordeal would end soon, but the fear of her uncertain fate grew as they continued their journey.

After being taken to a different state, Alicia found herself in a basement where she was subjected to unspeakable horrors. She described the experience as beyond her 13-year-old comprehension.

Throughout her captivity, Alicia endured physical and emotional abuse, feeling helpless as her abuser inflicted pain upon her. Despite the passage of time, the trauma she experienced left a lasting impact.

Rescued by the FBI after a viewer recognized her from missing person posters, Alicia’s harrowing ordeal came to an end. Her abductor, Scott Tyree, was apprehended and sentenced for his crimes, though he has since faced legal consequences for violating parole.

Today, Alicia advocates for child protection and online safety, aiming to raise awareness and prevent similar incidents from befalling others. Her efforts, including the establishment of the Alicia Project and the implementation of Alicia’s Law, highlight the importance of safeguarding children from online threats.

Alicia’s resilience serves as a reminder of the urgency in responding swiftly to cases of missing children, emphasizing the critical role of timely intervention in ensuring their safety and well-being.
