An individual previously convicted of double murder, who managed to escape custody and remain at large for three days following the conviction for fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend and her new partner, was executed today.
Charles Victor Thompson, aged 55, was put to death via lethal injection in Huntsville, Texas. Just before the execution, Thompson pleaded for forgiveness. One of the witnesses, whose son was a victim of Thompson, expressed satisfaction at the killer’s demise.
Thompson, who spent close to three decades on death row, became the first person to be executed in the United States this year. The murders he committed in April 1998 involved the shooting deaths of Glenda Dennise Hayslip, 39, and Darren Keith Cain, 30, at Hayslip’s residence in Houston, Texas.
In his final words, Thompson asked the families of his victims for forgiveness to aid in their healing process. Following a brief prayer from a spiritual adviser, Thompson acknowledged the lack of winners in the situation.
Thompson expressed remorse for the lasting impact of his actions, stating that his execution only created more victims and prolonged trauma. He concluded with a message of love and faith to those present.
As the lethal injection took effect, Thompson exhibited signs of distress before ultimately passing away 22 minutes later.
Thompson and Ms. Hayslip had a prior romantic relationship that ended due to Thompson’s possessive and abusive behavior. The fatal altercation occurred when Thompson returned to Hayslip’s apartment in the early hours of the morning and fatally shot both Hayslip and Cain.
Prosecutors highlighted the lengthy wait for justice endured by the families of the victims before Thompson’s execution.
After having his original death sentence overturned, Thompson was resentenced to death following a new trial. He managed to escape custody briefly after this resentencing.
